Will it be AB Gladsaxe or Holbæk B&I who will face Holstebro in the third round of the Oddset Cup? That will be found out tomorrow, Tuesday, September 10, 2024, when AB makes the trip to Holbæk. The referee of the match, Niclas Gomes, kicks off the match at 19:00 in Holbæk Sportsby.
Holbæk B&I plays in the 3rd division, where they currently occupy 6th place. Last Saturday, they lost 1-0 to Sundby in Sundby Sports Park. Holbæk B&I has reached the second round of the Oddset Cup via a 3-0 win over Jyllinge FC. AB comes to the cup match after a 4-0 win over Frederiksberg Boldklub.
The last time AB met Holbæk B&I in the cup is all the way back in the autumn of 2008, when AB met Holbæk B&I, which at the time played under the name Nordvest FC. It was a professional superstructure at Holbæk Bold- og Idrætsforening, and the match was played at Holbæk Stadium.
It was a huge drama! At that time, Nordvest FC played in the Danmarksserien and AB in the 1st division. AB came to the cup match after knocking FC Midtjylland out of the cup at Gladsaxe Stadium. But unfortunately for AB, the sensation occurred. Nordvest FC sent AB out of the cup and home to Gladsaxe with a 5-3 defeat after extra time and a penalty shootout.
Part of the story is that Nordvest FC was reduced to 10 men shortly into the second half. It was not until the 90th minute that AB succeeded with a goal, where Poul Hübertz put AB ahead with 1-0. However, Holbæk did not need more than a minute, then they equalized and the extra time was a reality.
In extra time, there were no more goals and the game went to penalties. AB lost it 4-2. At that time, it was Flemming Christensen who was AB’s head coach and he was furious after the game, to say the least.
Head coach Joey Gudjonsson attaches great importance to the cup tournament and points out that it is about winning.
“We respect the cup tournament and we will come with a strong team tomorrow against Holbæk. We have to move on and we have to go as far as we possibly can. We want to play as many games as possible.”
“We are making some changes compared to the starting line-up in the last tournament match. It is a good opportunity for a lot of players to get on the pitch and get minutes, but it is also an opportunity for them to show their qualities. We know which formation Holbæk most often plays in and how they want to play. It will not be an easy battle to win. They play defensively and it is difficult to get through their chains. We have to be ready for a tough game – the most important thing in cup games is to win and move on.”
