Joey Guðjónsson is the new head coach

AB A/S is pleased to announce the appointment of Joey Guðjónsson as the club’s new head coach.

Guðjónsson has been an assistant coach of the Icelandic national team since 2022. His first role as head coach was at HK in 2016, after which he moved to his hometown ÍA in 2018. There, he led ÍA to promotion to Besta deild karla, the Icelandic top flight, and then secured the club three seasons in the top flight before joining the Icelandic national team. He was named Icelandic Coach of the Year in 2018.
Guðjónsson has also had an impressive playing career as a central midfielder, where he played at the highest level in England, Holland and Spain, among others. He spent 10 seasons in English football, including at Aston Villa in the Premier League and at Wolves and Burnley. He also played in the Eredivisie with RKC Waalwijk and in La Liga with Real Betis. Guðjónsson finished his career with 411 appearances and 45 goals. He also represented the Icelandic senior national team 34 times.
“I am delighted to have this opportunity and I am proud to become head coach of a historic club in Danish football with such passionate fans. AB has huge potential both on and off the pitch and is already laying the foundation for a successful next season. My football philosophy fits well with the club’s management, and we share the same ambitions. I’m looking forward to getting started, working with the players, meeting the fans and helping to achieve the club’s ambitions,” Guðjónsson said.
AB A/S’ CEO, Sofie Brandi Petersen, adds: “We went through a thorough recruitment process, where we in the management defined the type of head coach we wanted, and here Joey was our top candidate. We look forward to working with him, he is a good match as a leader, partner and representative of the club and we share the same values”
“We think we have built a really good squad and with Joey as head coach, we believe we have a strong foundation to achieve our goals for next season.
Sporting Director Jen Chang added: “We are delighted to have Joey join the club. He comes in with a positive mentality and a modern approach to how he wants to develop players and the team. He is a coach who loves to play attacking football and has a proven track record of leading teams to promotion. Joey has been successful in developing young players and he understands the importance of creating a link between the academy and the first team.”
Guðjónsson has signed a three-year contract with AB and will join as soon as possible.
Everyone at AB welcomes Guðjónsson to Gladsaxe.
