AB writes with Ágúst Hlynsson

AB has strengthened the offensive by buying the attacking midfielder Ágúst Hlynsson free from Icelandic Breiðablik. The former Icelandic U21 international made 5 goals and 1 assist in 32 appearances for Breiðablik in the domestic tournament in 2023 and a further 2 goals and 1 assist in 14 appearances in European matches. Hlynsson has signed a contract until the summer of 2027.

“Ágúst joins us at a crucial time in his career and we are very excited that he has chosen to work with us and develop further in the AB family,” says head coach David Roufpanah.

“He is a player with great intensity in his game, and he has good skills with the ball – and he always puts the team first. Despite his young age, Hlynsson has extensive international experience from various Icelandic youth national teams, the Champions League and the Europa League. When I first saw him on the Forest Dike, I could see the hunger and ambition in his eyes. There is no doubt that he is a player who can help us win.”

Hlynsson is a talent from Breiðablik’s academy. He made his senior debut as a 16-year-old in May 2016 against Kria in the Icelandic Cup. That same year, he became the youngest ever goalscorer for Breiðablik. He is also the fourth youngest player to participate in a Europa League match. Hlynsson was sold to Norwich in January 2017, where he scored 3 goals in 12 games for Norwich U18. He then moved to Brøndby in August 2017, where he scored 6 goals in 28 games for Brøndby U19 before moving to Víkingur and later AC Horsens.

After a 3-year period with loans to Hafnarfjörður and Valur along the way, Hlynsson was bought back by his former club Breiðablik in February 2023. In his career so far, Hlynsson has scored 19 goals and 17 assists in 95 appearances in the Icelandic top flight. He has also appeared in 6 Champions League qualifiers, 5 Europa League qualifiers, and 7 Superliga matches.

“I’m really looking forward to taking the green and white striped jersey over my head. I will do whatever it takes to win football matches,” says Hlynsson.

“I will give 110% for the team and the club to help it meet its goals. I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates. I have got a really good impression of the club, and I think we have all the prerequisites to take the next step up.”

Hlynsson has played 11 games and scored 1 goal for the Icelandic U21 national team. In total, Hlynsson has scored 5 goals in 35 games for various Icelandic youth national teams.
