Head coach Joey Gudjonsson has had a good first week of training with the team, and is looking forward to his debut match against top team Esbjerg tomorrow night.
“We have to play entertaining football. I want us to score a lot of goals and our fans always believe in the team that goes on the pitch,” Gudjonsson said.
“It’s important to me that the fans feel that the players play with heart and are proud to play for AB.”
Gudjonsson has quickly settled in well at Skovdiget, and has already held a number of player meetings to discuss his plans for the coming season.
“I have really been happy with the attitude of the players and their willingness to work hard in training this week, and I am sure that the players will take that with them into the game against Esbjerg,” Gudjonsson said.
“The willingness to work hard for your team paves the way for the success we are working towards. I’ve also seen a lot of quality in training and I’m looking forward to seeing those qualities in the three remaining games of the season.”
One player who will be missing from the Esbjerg game is Tim Freriks, who joined the club from Katwijk in July 2023 and has scored 15 goals in 30 games for AB this season. The striker has informed the club that he wants to seek new challenges next season. “Tim quickly adapted to Danish football and worked hard, and we appreciate his contribution,” Gudjonsson said.
“Earlier this week he told me that he wants to play at a higher level and we have allowed him to find a new club. As we are currently focusing on building the team for next season, Tim will sit out the next few games to give other players a chance. As Tim has one year left on his contract, we will work with him to find the best solution for all parties. Of course, the agreement has to be right for the player, but also fair for the club. There has already been a lot of interest in Tim and we never want to stand in the way of a player’s development.”
“Tim has had a very strong season for us, but if he decides to leave the club, we will look for a replacement,” said sporting director Jen Chang. “That said, we believe in the core of our squad and will only make a few select additions to the squad this summer.”
Gudjonsson will be in charge of AB, who are sixth in the table, with only one defeat in the last seven games of the promotion play-offs.
